Keough also owns Cafe Keough on South Main Street, a casual eatery featuring light breakfast and lunch fare in a historic downtown building. ![]() The dishes are meant to be snacks, not entrees. The eats are what Keough describes as “European bar food.” Items like prosciutto and brie tartines, fried artichoke hearts with lemon aioli and french fries are a few of the offerings. When was the last time you saw those drinks on a bar menu? Wine and beer are also available. Even 1980s throwbacks like Sex on the Beach and White Russians are part of the offerings. The drink menu hangs on the wall and, like the drinks, even the menu is old school - an adjustable letter board set in a retro hanging case.Ĭlassics like Old Fashioneds, Manhattans, Gimlets and Singapore Slings are a few of the options. It felt like the bar had been a neighborhood fixture for years, not a spot that was brand new. The bar was full, lights were dimmed, and 1980s tunes blared from a vintage 1979 jukebox. Over the weekend, Keough gave a sneak peek of his new bar, which he jokingly referred to as the new “neighborhood clubhouse.” “Don’t expect to find rosemary in a drink here.” It’s all about the classics at Bar Keough. Keough re-did the space himself, spending time to make it just right. The centerpiece is a red-topped bar that seats 10. Casual tables line the walls, offering seating for about 30. We were particularly disappointed in this experience because many of our guests were from out of town, so I was embarrassed for the way that they were treated as our guests to the city.Midtown Memphis has a new neighborhood corner bar.Īt the corner on Cooper and Peabody, the bar sits next door to Cafe 1912 and is the latest endeavor by longtime Memphis restaurateur Kevin Keough.īar Keough is small and cozy. When asked who the owner was so that we might follow up on this experience, the manager on duty responded that he did not know who the owner was nor was he authorized to share this information with us. Our party remained calm and courteous, yet the common decency was not reciprocated. However, we were the ONLY party in the entire restaurant which further solidified the notion that their behavior and level of service was unacceptable. ![]() I think we would have ignored this behavior if there was a full house, and we were in the midst of the brunch rush. They even left us alone for another hour in the private seating area upstairs. The wait staff and the manager were completely inconsiderate and offered no apologies for our dining experience. There were 2 people in our party who NEVER received their food. When half of the orders were brought to the table, many were incomplete. It took nearly an hour for our food orders to be placed. Our reservation was confirmed, seated promptly, ordered was all downhill from there. I hope the kitchen and dining room staff will be able to maintain the standard that we enoyed.Īs the culminating event for a 30th birthday celebration, my friends and family decided to dine here for Sunday brunch. I realize that different people get different experiences on different nights, but based on my own evening there, I would unhesitatingly recommend Automatic Slim's for its food, its atmosphere, and its service. ![]() Still, the components and the combination were delicious. I also had an appetizer of roasted red and yellow beets with a goat cheese croquette the beets were fabulous, but the balance of the dish was a bit off - the large, rich croquette overpowered the beets, even with the addition of nicely dressed greens that accompanied the dish. ![]() Both were seasoned beautifully, and the scallops were cooked perfectly. Beyond that, my main course of seared scallops on a bed of pumpkin seed risotto was nothing short of brilliant. I was quite surprised to check TripAdvisor afterwards and find so much criticism of surly or slow service our experience was just the opposite. We were greeted and seated graciously and had a superb meal, along with service that was courteous, capable, and expeditious without being at all rushed. Two of us wandered into Automatic Slim's on a Saturday night without a reservation or, frankly, any research or forethought.
